Falcons Down Three Ranked Teams and Earn Tournament Title

PACE, Fla. - The University of Montevallo women's golf team withstood runs by No. 13 St. Edward's and No.10 Northeastern State to earn the Bubba Watson Invitational Title by two strokes. It also marked the first victory over rival West Florida in program history.

"What a great way to start off the season," said head coach Jeff Palmer. "I'm so proud of these girls and how they fought today. This is one of the biggest victories in Montevallo women's golf history."

Sophomore Britney Martin (Fishers, Indiana) led the way for the Falcons ending the tournament in second place with a 158. Freshman Emma Breen (Swindon, England) continued to impress finishing just one stroke behind Martin.

The most impressive performance of the day came from junior Rachel Shaner (Madison, Alabama). She shot an 80 which ranked as the fourth lowest round of the tournament for day two. The gusty winds and tough pin placement made shooting below 80 a tough and very rare accomplishment.

Rounding out the golfers for the Falcons were sophomores Emily Gibson (Toronto, Ontario) and Heather Mutton (Dunstable, England). Gibson finished with a 166 while Mutton shot a 169.

As a whole the Falcons led the tournament with a 645 followed by No. 13 St. Edward's (647), No. 10 Northeastern State (649) and No. 8 West Florida (661).

The Falcons will be back in action Monday, October 6 as they begin play at the Lenoir-Rhyne Fall Beach Bash in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
