Falcons Finish Ninth at Ann Rhoads 'Southern Shootout
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's golf team opened up the 2009-10 season with a ninth-place finish at the Ann Rhoads 'Southern Shootout hosted by Birmingham Southern College. The Falcons were led by junior Emily Gibson (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate) who finished tied for fifth and was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Falcons other finishers were sophomore Emma Breen (Swindon, England/Kingsdown) who came in tied for 30th with fellow teammate Heather Mutton (Dunstable, England/Queensbury Upper). Freshman Kayla Witt (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) rounded out the Montevallo team with a 45th place finish.
"It was great to get our first tournament in the bag," said head coach Justin Pratt. "This will definitely help us see what things we need to work on before we head to Florida in a few weeks to take on some conference competition."
No golfer on the course shot under par with the top finisher coming in two over par with a 142. Gibson finished just six strokes behind at 148.
The University of West Florida took home the team trophy with a team score of 594. Jackson State came in second with a score of 629 and three teams tied for third with a score of 635. The Falcons were just six strokes behind eighth place finisher Spring Hill College who finished with a team score of 656.
The Falcons will return to action at the Flagler Fall Slam on Oct. 26-28. The tournament will take place at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla.
