Montevallo Athletes Gain Valuable Experience at Youth Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - On February 20th and 21st, the women's soccer and volleyball teams from the University of Montevallo volunteered at the Lakeshore Foundation 2010 Magic City Youth Wheelchair Basketball Regional Tournament. The Lakeshore Foundation is an organization that enables people with physically disabling conditions to lead healthy, active and independent lifestyles through physical activity, sport, recreation and research.
"We went up there as part of our community service initiatives," said women's soccer head coach Patricia Hughes. "We have a partnership with the Lakeshore Foundation and both soccer and volleyball did a combined 126 hours of volunteer work with 21 athletes and staff."
The teams got to help at the scorer's table and in other areas around the facility.
Freshman Brittany Wilson (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) from the women's volleyball team found this experience very humbling.
"It was amazing how these athletes played the game," said Wilson. "You could see the determination and the dedication on their faces as they played. It will be an experience that I will never forget."
