Falcons Lose Heartbreaker in Double Overtime, 3-2
MORROW, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-3-1 PBC) suffered a heartbreaking loss on the road tonight (Oct. 8) in double overtime to Clayton State University (3-6-1, 2-2-1), 3-2. The Falcons led for most of the match but a late penalty kick goal by the Lakers sent the game into overtime. The Lakers scored the game winner midway through the second overtime to pick up the key conference win.
The Falcons outshot the Lakers 22-16 and edged them in shots on goal 11-9.
UM got on the board first as junior Erin Jollay (Richardson, Texas/Berkner) knocked in a rebound off a shot from sophomore Denise Mannion (Manchester, England/Stockport) in the 14th minute of play. The Falcons controlled the rest of the first half and headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Lakers struck just 46 seconds into the second half to tie the game as Jennifer Dreasler knocked in a cross from the right side. The Falcons regained the lead in the 61st minute as Angela Buonassisi (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) scored off an assist from Mannion. The Falcons once again held the lead for the next 22 minutes until a handball was called inside their own penalty box which gave the Lakers a penalty kick with just under eight minutes to play.
Caitlin Clark converted on the PK to tie the game at two. The Falcons were unable to regain the lead in the final eight minutes and the game headed to overtime.
The Falcons outshot the Lakers in the first overtime 3-2 and put three shots on goal but were still unable to convert. In the second overtime neither team registered a shot until the Lakers sent home the game winner inside the box.
The Falcons will return to action Sunday, Oct. 11 at 12:00 p.m. as they host USC Aiken in a For the Cure/Pink Polo Day game.
