Falcons Win in Overtime Thriller, 3-2
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team (4-6-1, 1-3-1 PBC) captured its first Peach Belt Conference victory in thrilling fashion as the Falcons used a late comeback and an overtime goal to defeat USC Aiken (2-9-0, 0-6-0). The game was also the Falcons Kick For The Cure/Pink Polo Day and featured the Falcons wearing pink uniforms and using pink soccer balls provided by Select Sport America.
The Falcons and Pacers played an even game for the first 30 minutes until USC Aiken broke onto the scoreboard off a deflected save. Montevallo goalkeeper Alyssa Maxwell (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) made the initial save on a rocketed shot but the save bounced out of her hands and to the awaiting attacker who kicked it in.
Just six minutes later Falcons reserve Erin Duncan (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) blasted a shot of the post that deflected right into the head of Paige Scott (Denman Island, British Columbia/Reynolds) who headed it in to make it 1-1. The two team entered halftime still tied 1-1.
The shots were nearly even in the first half with the Falcons taking eight and the Pacers striking seven. The second half would be a much different story with the Falcons taking 13 shots compared to the Pacers four.
Despite the small amount of shots the Pacers used their four shots to net one goal just 10 minutes into the second half. Alie Brady fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net to give the Pacers a 2-1 lead.
UM continued to battle and take numerous shots and it finally paid off in the 89th minute as Scott received a pass from Natalie Martineau (Oakville, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire) and blasted a shot into the back of the net to tie the game with 1:09 left on the clock. Kristin Rosato (Pinson, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Both teams went scoreless in the final minute to push the game into overtime. About three minutes into the overtime period the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick after a Falcon attacker was taken down inside the box. The penalty attempt was saved by the Pacer keeper giving USC Aiken some momentum.
That momentum was short-lived as just two minutes later Erin Jollay (Richardson, Texas/Berkner) received a pass on the left side of the penalty area and fired a shot past the diving keeper to give the Falcons a 3-2 win.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 5:00 p.m. as they travel to Columbus State University to take on Florida Southern University in a neutral site match.
