Falcons Earn 2-2 Tie Against Florida Southern

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Playing in their third-straight overtime match the Falcons of the University of Montevallo women's soccer team (4-6-2) played to a tie with Florida Southern College (9-5-1). UM controlled much of the match but was unable to gain the game winner late.

Freshman goalkeeper Margret Ingthorsdottir (Sandgerdi, Iceland/Fjolbrauteskoli Sudurnesia) made the first start of her career a memorable one as she made seven saves to keep the Falcons hopes alive.

UM controlled the first 20 minutes of the match as the Falcons kept the ball out of their own end most of the first half. The Moccasins started to make a charge around the 30 minute mark and struck the first blow at the 32:30 mark as Alex Hoover knocked in a cross from a streaking Ashlie Haas.

The Falcons evened the match with 34 seconds left in the first half as Kristin Rosato (Pinson, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) fed the ball to the corner for Natalie Martineau (Oakville, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire). Martineau then sent a cross to the front of the net that was finished off by the head of Paige Scott (Denman Island, British Columbia/Reynolds).

Heading into the second half the Falcons had the momentum. UM kept up the pressure and it paid off once again. Eight minutes into the second period Martineau once again made an excellent pass across the field finding an open Nicola Stolworthy (Belton, England/Cliff Park) who fired a shot to the opposite side of the net to put the Falcons ahead 2-1.

The Falcons held their lead for the next 20 minutes but a streaking Morgan Sammons from FSC got behind the defense and finished off a one-on-one to tie the game. The shot nearly missed the goal as it went off the crossbar and bounced just inside the endline.

The Falcons and Moccasins played even soccer the rest of the way and headed into overtime. Neither team had many scoring chances in the two overtimes as defense took over. FSC was able to get two shots off in the extra time while the Falcons went without a shot.

UM and FSC ended up with 12 shots each. FSC had the advantage in shots on goal 10-7.

The Falcons will return to action this Saturday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. as they host Georgia Southwestern State University.
