Falcons Late Rally Falls Short, 3-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team (5-7-2, 2-4-1 PBC) fell behind early against North Georgia College and State University (8-3-2, 4-2-1 PBC) and fell despite a late rally that led to one goal and a number of scoring chances. The Saints scored twice in the first 26 minutes and never looked back as they went on to win 3-1. The Falcons held NGCSU without a shot on goal for the final 43 minutes and played most of the second half on the NGCSU end.

The Saints broke the scoreless tie early in the first half as Kelsey Martin broke through for a one-on-one with the keeper just three minutes into the game. The Saints struck again just 22 minutes later as Laura Lane shot in a cross to put the Saints up 2-0.

The first half would end with NGCSU leading 2-0. The Saints added to their lead in the opening minutes of the second half as Martin struck again as she headed in a corner that beat the keeper for a 3-0 lead.

The falcons began to push the tempo and forced the Saints on their heals and it paid off in the 73rd minute as Jade Skillen (New Market, England/West Suffolk) fed Natalie Martineau (Oakville, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire) a ball into the box which Martineau slide across the face of the goal for an easy tap-in by freshman Paige Scott (Denman Island, British Columbia/Reynolds).

The Falcons continued to pressure and fired off six shots in the second half including two on goal. Scott and senior Angela Buonassisi (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) led the Falcons in shots with three each while Skillen and freshman Darla Allen (Pinson, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) had two. One of Allen shots was a free kick that just slid wide of the net as she blasted a shot from outside the penalty area.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12:30 p.m. as they travel to Lander University for a Peach Belt Conference match.
