Falcons Topple Regionally Ranked Lander, 1-0

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team (6-7-2, 3-4-1 PBC) picked up a huge 1-0 victory over the seventh ranked team in the Southeast Region Lander University on the road. The win keeps the Falcons postseason hopes alive as they currently sit in the eighth, final postseason spot, in the Peach Belt Conference with two matches to play. The Falcons were led by a pair of freshmen as Alyssa Maxwell (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) made eight spectacular saves in goal and Paige Scott (Denman Island, British Columbia/Reynolds) scored the go-ahead goal just three minutes into the second half.

Lander out-shot the Falcons 16-14 and had a 8-6 shot on goal advantage.

UM and Lander played a scoreless first half as the Falcons out-shot the Bearcats 9-5. UM struck first in the 49th minute of play as Scott worked her way behind the Bearcat defense and beat the LU keeper one-on-one to put the Falcons ahead 1-0.

Maxwell made six saves in the second half to keep the Falcons ahead as she handed Lander just its second shutout of the entire season. The loss marked just the third defeat the Bearcats had suffered all year.

UM was led in shots by Scott who had five while sophomore Natalie Martineau (Oakville, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire) chipped in four.

The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 p.m. as they travel to No. 3 Columbus State University for another key Peach Belt Conference match.
