Falcons Drop High-Scoring Contest at No. 7 Columbus State, 6-3

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team (6-8-2, 3-5-1 PBC) dropped a high-scoring contest at No. 7 Columbus State University (14-1-2, 7-1-1 PBC), 6-3. The Falcons fell behind early and a late comeback fell short as time expired. UM was led by a trio of goal scorers Ally Larese (Enterprise, Ala./Enterprise), Natalie Martineau (Oakville, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire) and Erin Duncan (Orlando, Fla./Olympia).
The Falcons gave up three goals in the opening 20 minutes including allowing the first goal just 47 seconds into the game. The first half settled down after the opening flurry with CSU scoring just one more time before heading into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons finally struck a blow 17 minutes into the second half as Larese scored her first collegiate goal off an unassisted play to beat the keeper.
The Cougars would respond with their fifth and sixth goals just eight and 11 minutes later to take a 6-1 lead.
UM began a comeback as Martineau scored an unassisted goal in the 78th minute and was followed by a goal by Duncan in the 89th minute to cut the CSU lead to three. Duncan was assisted by freshman Jenna Kuzemski (Victoria, British Columbia/Belmont).
The Falcons took a total of 14 shots with 13 on goal while the Cougars took 17 shots and 11 on goal.
UM's Alyssa Maxwell (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) took the loss playing the first 28 minutes while making three saves. She was relieved by freshman Margret Ingthorsdottir (Sandgerdi, Iceland/Fjolbrauteskoli Sudurnesia) who played 62 minutes and made two saves.
The Falcons now sit in a three-way tie for seventh in the Peach Belt Conference with one game to play. The top eight teams advance to the PBC Tournament.
The Falcons will return to action this Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. as they travel to Georgia College and State University.
