Falcons PBC Tournament Run Ends in Championship Game Loss

EVANS, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team (8-9-3) made history on Sunday as they became the first No. 8 seed to make it to the Championship Match of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Falcons had an unbelievable run knocking off No. 1 seed and nationally ranked Columbus State at home before traveling to Evans, Ga. and taking on No. 4 seed Georgia College and State University. The Falcons won that contest 2-1 and headed to the Championship Match to take on No. 2 seed and nationally ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University (15-3-3).

UM's Paige Scott (Denman Island, British Columbia/Reynolds), Natalie Martineau (Oakville, Ontario/Ecole Secondaire) and Denise Mannion (Manchester, England/Stockport) were all named to the PBC All-Tournament Team.

The Falcons looked strong early as they took a 1-0 lead as Scott scored of an assist from fellow freshman Jenna Kuzemski (Victoria, British Columbia/Belmont) in the 30th minute of play. Just 11 minutes later the Pirates tied things up when PBC All-Time leading goal scorer Kristin Burton found the net off assists from Katie Jesser and Erin O'Rourke.

The first half would end with the game knotted at one and the Pirates with a 8-3 advantage in shots.

The Falcons once again came out firing in the second half as Martineau scored off an assist from Scott to put the Falcons ahead 2-1 just 1:31 into the second half.

The Pirates scored the game-tying goal just under two minutes later as Carey Patterson scored off a corner kick from Burton. A little over seven minutes later the Pirates scored again off a deflection as Morgan Mitchell put AASU up 3-2.

Mitchell scored again at the 71st minute mark off another corner by Burton. The scoring finally ended at the 79:56 mark as Burton got her second goal of the match on a penalty kick.

The Falcons were out-shot 27-7 in the game and 19-4 in the second half. Freshman Alyssa Maxwell (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) made eight saves in net playing almost the entire 90 minutes as she was relieved with 1:59 left on the clock by freshman Margret Ingthorsdottir (Sandgerdi, Iceland/Fjolbrauteskoli Sudurnesia).

UM was led in shots by Martineau who had three while Scott chipped in two.
