Falcons Fall in PBC Tournament, 2-0
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of Montevallo women's soccer team's (6-11-2) 2010 season came to a close this evening as the Falcons fell to UNC Pembroke (15-2-2) in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. UM fell by a score of 2-0 but played a very even match with the Braves. UNCP out-shot the Falcons 18-15 but UM won the shots on goal battle 5-3. Junior Denise Mannion (Manchester, England/Stockport) led the team in shots with four including one on goal.
Three Falcons each had three shots including freshman Asgerdur Palsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Verzlunarskoli Islands), sophomore Paige Scott (Denman Island, British Columbia/Reynolds) and sophomore Nicola Stolworthy (Belton, England/Cliff Park).
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Maxwell (White Rock, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) made one save in the match while taking home the loss.
UNCP scored both their goals in the opening half as Anna Svensson scored at the 22:29 mark and Sheena Mature knocked in a goal at the 41:06 mark.
The Falcons will lose just two seniors of the 2010 squad and return their six top scorers for next season. Freshman Christine Prince (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) ends the season as the top goal scorer for the Falcons with seven goals while Palsdottir and Scott end the the season tied for the lead in assists with four each.
UM will also return their two goalkeepers for next season. Maxwell and freshman Kaitlin Thomas (Okotous, Alberta/Foothills Composite) recorded a combined 1.92 goals against average which was just 0.76 above their opponents GAA.
