Falcons Drown Tritons, 7-2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Montevallo tennis team (9-4) returned to its winning ways against Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd College. The Falcons dominated the doubles matches winning all three before pulling away in singles winning four out of six. Junior Alex Mangum (San Antonio, Texas), freshman Helene Nordgreen (Bergen, Norway), junior Emily Blackwood (Cullman, Alabama) and freshman Ashlyn Bolton (Chattanooga, Tennessee) all went 2-0 on the day to lead the Falcons to victory.
The Falcons began the match sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team won 8-5 while No. 2 and 3 won 8-3. The match got interesting in the singles matches as almost all six matches were close fought battles. Mangum, at No. 1, lost her first set 6-2 before winning a tight second set 7-5 and then hanging on for a 6-4 win in the third set. The Tritons took No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2 and No. 6 singles 7-5, 6-3.
Nordgreen battled in her first set winning a close 7-5 set before blowing out her opponent in the second set 6-0. Another interesting battle occurred in the No. 4 singles. Blackwood won her first set 7-5 and then dropped the second set 6-2. She stormed back in the third set destroying her opponent 6-0.
One of the toughest matches of the day was at No. 5 singles where Montevallo's Bolton came out on top. She dropped the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 before winning the next two sets 6-4 and 6-2.
The Falcons will return to the court on Monday, March 16 against Flagler College in Orland, Florida.
