Falcons Pick Up First Conference Victory of the Season, 7-2
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo tennis team (10-8, 1-3 GSC East) won its first conference match of the season in a 7-2 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The win marks the 10th victory of the year, the most since 2003 when the Falcons finished 12-7. This season also marks the first winning season since 2003 as well.
Junior Alex Mangum (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Helene Nordgreen (Bergen, Norway) each went 2-0 on the day. Mangum won the No. 1 singles along with teammate Emily Blackwood (Cullman, Alabama) 8-6 before taking the No. 1 singles match 7-5, 6-1. Nordgreen combined with junior Kristi Kelly (Tallahassee, Florida) to win the No. 2 doubles 8-2 before winning No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Ashlyn Bolton (Chattanooga, Tennessee) had the most dominating victory of the day as she won the No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0. Bolton along with sophomore Kelley Vaughn (Hoover, Alabama) picked up an easy forfeit victory in the No. 3 doubles while Vaughn took home No. 6 singles by forfeit as well.
The Falcons will return to the court on Friday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. as they play their final match of the season against the University of North Alabama in Gulf South Conference East Division play.
