Falcons Drop a Pair to UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team (3-10, 1-8 PBC) hosted UNC Pembroke (7-8, 2-4 PBC) and fourth-ranked Francis Marion University (9-3, 5-2 PBC) this past weekend. UM hosted UNCP on Saturday and fell 6-3 in a highly-contested match. The Falcons then had to move their match with FMU to Samford University to the indoor facility due to the rain on Sunday and dropped the match 7-2.
The Falcons opened the UNCP match by winning two of the three doubles pairings as senior Kristi Kelly (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) and junior Calli Robinson (Adel, Ga./Cook) combined to take the No.2 doubles 9-8 as they won the tiebreaker 8-6. In the No. 3 doubles senior Alex Mangum (San Antonio, Texas/John Marshall) and junior Kodi Bobo (Cullman, Ala./West Point) won 8-5. Despite leading 2-1 heading into the singles matches the Falcons could not hold onto the lead as UNCP won five of the six matches and took the overall match 6-3.
Kelly was the lone Falcon to win her singles match as she took the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-4. Bobo had the lead in her No. 6 singles match but had to retire due to injury.
UM then hosted fourth-ranked Francis Marion University on Sunday. Due to rain in the area the Falcons moved their match indoors at Samford University in Birmingham. The Falcons won just two matches both by forfeit due to FMU only fielding a team of five players. UM won only five other games on the day and three of those came from Robinson in the Ni. 5 singles match. Robison lost 6-0, 6-3 but captured more games than any other Falcon on the day. Sophomore Helene Nordgreen (Bergen, Norway/Bergen Handels Gymnasium) won a pair of games against the sixth-ranked player in the country Tereza Sykorova as she fell 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match.
The women’s tennis team returns to action Tuesday, March 23 at 2 p.m. as the Falcons host Georgia College and State University in some more Peach Belt Conference action.
