Falcons Sweep Doubleheader against Tuskegee

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team (5-11) picked up a pair of wins against Tuskegee University, 5-0 and 6-3. The Falcons were scheduled to play Tuskegee earlier this season and the match was rained out so instead of making up the match on a separate day the Falcons and Golden Tigers decided to play an unusual tennis doubleheader.

UM won the first match 5-0 due to three forfeits by the Golden Tigers and a pair of doubles wins by the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams. Sophomore Helene Nordgreen (Bergen, Norway/Bergen Handels Gymnasium) and senior Alex Mangum (San Antonio, Texas/John Marshall) took the No. 1 singles match 8-6 while senior Kristi Kelly (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) and junior Calli Robinson (Adel, Ga./Cook) combined to take the No.2 doubles 8-5.

Tuskegee had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and five and six singles due to only having four players on the roster. With those three forfeits and the two doubles wins it was impossible for the Golden Tigers to comeback in the match.

In the second match the Falcons also picked up the three forfeits but they were unable to win both of the doubles so the match had to move on to the singles portion. Kelly and Robinson won their doubles match 8-1 but the Golden Tigers gained revenge in the No. 1 doubles taking a 8-4 win over Nordgreen and Mangum.

Mangum and Kelly went on to win their No. 2 and three singles match, respectively, giving the Falcons six points which was good enough for the victory. Mangum won the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-2 while Kelly won the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-1.

Tuskegee picked up wins in the No. 1 singles and No. 4 singles to give them three points.

The women’s tennis team returns to action Tuesday, March 30 at 4 p.m. as the Falcons travel to the University of Mobile for a non-conference match-up.
