Falcons Dominate Flight Two of Central Alabama Invitational

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. - The University of Montevallo tennis team competed at the Central Alabama Invitational this past weekend and dominated the Flight Two singles and doubles competition. Newcomers Kodi Bobo (Cullman, Ala./West Point) and Calli Robinson (Adel, Ga./Cook) made it to the finals of the Flight Two singles with Robinson gaining the edge 6-1, 6-0. In doubles it was four Montevallo players battling for the title as senior Emily Blackwood (Cullman, Ala./West Point) and Amy McGucken (Selma, Ala./Morgan Academy) teamed up against sophomore Helene Nordgreen (Bergen, Norway/Bergen Handels Gymnasium) and Bobo. Nordgreen and Bobo edged their teammates in the finals 8-3.

In the singles competition Blackwood, Bobo and Robinson all won their first round matches in Flight 2. McGucken fell to Ashley Leverett from Central Alabama 6-4, 6-1 but then went on to win three straight matches to reach the finals of the back draw.

Blackwood won her first round match over Anna Crousillac from Millsaps College 6-0, 6-0. She then defeated Amber Gurubel from Central Alabama 6-1, 6-4 before falling in the third round 6-1, 6-4 to Savannah Sapienza out of Central Florida C.C.

Bobo and Robinson coasted through the first three rounds winning in straight sets. In the fourth round with a trip to the finals on the line both had to go three sets to defeat their competition. Bobo won 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Sapienza while Robinson defeated Kelly Bush from Central Florida C.C. 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles both teams coasted through the first round with Blackwood and McGucken wining 8-1 and Nordgreen and Bobo winning 8-0. Blackwood and McGucken had a tougher time in the next to rounds wining 8-6 in both matches while Nordgreen and Bobo knocked off their opponents 8-4 in both rounds.

Two Falcons competed in the Flight 1 singles. Nordgreen and senior Kristi Kelly (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) each won their first rounds but fell in the second round. Nordgreen defeated Hillary Teasley who was the number two player from Young Harris College 6-1, 6-0 and Kelly defeated Sarah Deese from Young Harris College 6-1, 3-1 (withdraw).

In the Flight 1 doubles Kelly and Robison teamed up and won their first round match against Teasley and Michele Allen 8-0 but dropped the second round match 8-4.

The Falcons will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. as they host Central Alabama C.C. in a dual match.
