Falcons Win Season Opener, 6-3

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2012 season at home hosting the defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions, Clark Atlanta University (0-2). The Falcons downed the Panthers 6-3. Freshman Niki Polcerova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sukromne Gymnazium), senior Helene Nordgreen (Bergen, Norway/Bergen Handels Gymnasium), freshman Meagan Stevens (Helena, Ala./Hope Christian) and junior Amy McGucken (Selma, Ala./Morgan Academy) all picked up two wins on the day.

Polcerova took home the number one singles match 6-2, 6-4 and then teamed up with Nordgreen to win number one doubles 8-6. Nordgreen won the number three singles match 6-4, 6-0. Stevens won at number four singles 6-4, 7-5 and then teamed up with McGucken to win number two doubles 8-6. McGucken also won number five singles 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the most contested match of the day.

The Panthers won number two singles after junior Lauren Blair (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Central Alabama C.C.) had to retire due to injury. CAU also won number six single 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 and number three doubles 8-0.

The Falcons will look to continue to roll this Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m. as they travel to Tuskegee University.
