Sixty-Five Montevallo Student-Athletes Named to 2009-10 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo athletic department had 65 student-athletes named to the 2009-10 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll. Men’s soccer led all Montevallo teams with 13 members being named to the list. The Presidential Honor Roll recognizes all student-athletes at the 13 PBC member institutions who had a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the academic year.

Volleyball Set to Host Individual All Skills Summer Camp
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Head coach Katie O’Brien of the University of Montevallo volleyball team has announced the Falcons will host a three day camp from June 9-11. The camp is open to all female athletes in grades 6-12. Coach O’Brien and her coaching staff provide an energetic and active camp for young players who are dedicated to developing the skills necessary to play volleyball.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Eight of the top student-athletes at the University of Montevallo were honored with the announcement of the athletic department’s annual awards for 2009-10. The announcement came at the annual athletic awards banquet held on the campus of the University of Montevallo last evening (April 28).

UM Spends a Day in the Sun with Local Fifth Graders
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – On Thursday April 15 the University of Montevallo Athletic Department joined forces with Montevallo Connection to give 110 fifth graders an experience of higher education and collegiate athletics at the University of Montevallo. Something they will never forget! The purpose of the Montevallo Connection is to re-energize and further strengthen the partnership between the University of Montevallo faculty and the faculty in the Montevallo schools. The Montevallo Connection is dedicated to cultural, educational, athletic and professional exchanges that will enhance the educational experiences of both students in the Montevallo public schools and those at the University of Montevallo.

Montevallo Awarded NCAA Division II Coaching Grant
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Montevallo was recently one of 18 Division II institutions awarded a coaching enhancement grant. The every-other-year grants were established to address access, recruitment, selection and long-term success of women, ethnic minorities and other individuals in Division II. The program seeks to overcome hiring barriers by providing funds that help schools create assistant coaching positions.

Montevallo Athletes Gain Valuable Experience at Youth Wheelchair Basketball Tournament
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On February 20th and 21st, the women’s soccer and volleyball teams from the University of Montevallo volunteered at the Lakeshore Foundation 2010 Magic City Youth Wheelchair Basketball Regional Tournament. The Lakeshore Foundation is an organization that enables people with physically disabling conditions to lead healthy, active and independent lifestyles through physical activity, sport, recreation and research.

Volleyball Receives 2009 PBC Sportsmanship Award
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team has been awarded the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Volleyball Sportsmanship Award for 2009-10. The Peach Belt Conference Awards Program honors one team from each of the 12 participating championship sports following their championship season. The team selected is the one who best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and conducts themselves with a high degree of integrity, character and class.

Three Falcons Named to PBC All-Academic Teams
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team was awarded three players on the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Teams. Sophomore Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) was named First Team All-Academic while seniors Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) and Lauren Markle (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) picked up a Second Team nods.

Volleyball set to Host Holiday Clinic
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Head coach Katie O’Brien of the University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team has announced that the Falcons will host a Holiday Clinic. It will be a one day clinic on Sunday, December 6 from 2-5 p.m. The clinic is for girls in grades 10-12th and is also open to Junior College players who want to sharpen their volleyball skills and work with current collegiate players.

Falcons Fall in Semifinals of the PBC Tournament
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The fourth-seeded University of Montevallo Falcons (20-14) fell to the number one seed Flagler College (31-8) in a 3-0 semifinal match at the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament, part of the PBC-GEICO Championship series. The Falcons were led by first team All-Conference selection Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who drove home 13 kills and dug up eight balls to lead the team.

Falcons Pick Up Huge 3-1 Win in PBC Quarterfinals
AIKEN, S.C. – The fourth-seeded University of Montevallo Falcons got 14 kills from senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and 13 from Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) as they held off a persistent USC Aiken team in a 3-1 quarterfinal win at the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament, part of the PBC-GEICO Championship series. With the win, UM (20-13) advanced to face top-seeded Flagler on Saturday at 4:00 pm eastern. USC Aiken (15-18), seeded fifth in the tournament, sees their season come to a close. UM won the match 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21.

Falcons Jump to Fifth in Southeast Region Rankings
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (19-13, 8-6 PBC) moved up to fifth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings. The Falcons spent much of the year ranked ninth in the region but after a strong finish to the regular season the voters awarded the Falcons with a fifth-place spot. The top-eight from each region advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Falcons Ready to Begin their First PBC Conference Tournament
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team (19-13, 8-6 PBC) is getting set to head to Aiken, S.C. for their first Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The three-day tournament, which is part of the PBC-GEICO Championship Series, will run Friday, November 13-Sunday, November 15. The Falcons qualified as the fourth seed in the eight-team field. UM will take on the host USC Aiken in the first round on Friday at 6 p.m. eastern.

Falcons Close out Regular Season with 3-0 Win
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (19-13, 8-6 PBC) closed out the 2009 regular season with a 3-0 sweep of Lander University (17-14, 5-9 PBC). The Falcons will now head to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed and take on host USC Aiken who is the fifth seed. Today’s match was also Senior Day for four Flacons who played their final regular season match at BankTrust Arena. The volleyball program honored Carson Anderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor), Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere), Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and Lauren Markle (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame).

Falcons Pick Up a Pair of Wins at Home
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (18-13, 7-6 PBC) won a pair of matches against USC Aiken (14-17, 5-9 PBC) and Miles College (6-14). The Falcons won in thrilling fashion against Aiken 3-2 before dominating Miles 3-0. Senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) led the team in kills in both matches picking up 20 against Aiken before scoring 10 against Miles.

Garrison Named to Second Team Academic All-District
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Sophomore setter Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) of the University of Montevallo volleyball team (16-13, 6-6 PBC) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Garrison has a 4.00 GPA in general studies.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (16-13) dropped a 3-0 match on the road at the University of West Florida. The Falcons were led by senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) who had nine kills and no errors for a .391 hitting percentage.

Falcons Win in Thrilling Fashion, 3-1
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team (16-12, 6-6 PBC) evened out its Peach belt Conference record with a 3-1 win over UNC Pembroke on the road. The win gives the Falcons the season sweep over the Lady Braves who they beat at home 3-0. The Falcons were led by senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) who had 18 kills, 14 digs and three service aces.

Falcons Sweep Season Series with Francis Marion, 3-0
FLORENCE, S.C. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team (15-12, 5-6 PBC) downed Francis Marion University (11-15, 3-7 PBC) 3-0 for the second time this season to sweep the season-series. The Falcons were coming off a 13-day layoff due to the cancellation of their most recent tournament. The rust did not show as the Falcons won in convincing fashion 25-21, 25-18 and 25-20.

Carson-Newman Volleyball Tournament Cancelled
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team’s matches at the Carson-Newman Tournament have been cancelled due to two teams pulling out because of illness. The Falcons will return to action next Friday, Oct. 30 at 6:00 p.m. as they travel to Francis Marion University for a Peach Belt Conference contest.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (14-12, 4-6 PBC) fell 3-0 against Flagler College at home. The Falcons fell 25-18, 25-13 and 26-24.

Falcons Fall in Final Points of Fifth Set, 3-2
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (14-11, 4-5 PBC) jumped out to an early lead grabbing a 2-0 lead over the third ranked team in the region but dropped the final three sets to fall 3-2 against Armstrong Atlantic State University (16-7, 7-2 PBC). The Falcons were led by senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who had 17 kills and nine digs along with three service aces. The match was also the Falcons Dig Pink event which helped raise money and awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (14-10) picked up its first Southeast Region ranking in school history. The Falcons are ranked ninth in the most recent NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.

Falcon Volleyball to Host Dig Pink Event Friday Night
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Following women’s soccer’s successful Breast Cancer Awareness Month activity, Kick For the Cure/Pink Polo Day, women’s volleyball is doing its part to increase awareness about breast cancer by hosting a fundraiser at this Friday’s game against Armstrong Atlantic State University, Dig Pink – The Power of Pink. The event will raise money for the Side-Out Foundation. The women’s volleyball team will take the court in pink uniforms to visually show their support for breast cancer awareness. All spectators are encouraged to do the same.

Falcons Dominate West Georgia, 3-0
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (14-10) picked up a dominating win on the road at the University of West Georgia (9-15). UM swept the Wolves 3-0 and never let UWG reach 20 points as they won 25-19, 25-13 and 25-13. UM had its highest attack percentage since defeating Clark Atlanta University at home on Sept. 6.

UM Falls on the Road, 3-0
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (13-10, 4-4 PBC) played in its third match in three days and fell 3-0 to Augusta State University (14-8, 5-4 PBC) who had not played a match since Wednesday. The Falcons started off slow and dropped the first set 25-14 and then battled the Jaguars the rest of the way falling 26-24 and 25-22 in the final two sets.

Falcons Outlast Lander on the Road, 3-2
GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (13-9, 4-3 PBC) continued its strong road trip with a huge 3-2 win over Lander University (12-7, 4-4 PBC). The Falcons were led by two of their seniors Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who each posted double-doubles for the second match-in-a-row. Johnson led the team with 17 kills while Handrick had 16.

UM Sweeps USC Aiken on the Road, 3-0
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (12-9, 3-3 PBC) returned its winning ways with a strong 3-0 win over USC Aiken (11-9, 3-5 PBC). The Falcons held the Pacers to under a .100 hitting percentage in all three sets and dominated in the third set holding them to a .000 hitting percentage. Three Falcons registered double-doubles including senior’s Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) and sophomore Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne).

Falcons Drop Hard Fought Match, 3-1
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (11-9, 2-3 PBC) fell in a hard fought match with Augusta State University (11-8, 3-4 PBC), 3-1. The Falcons and Jaguars battled in every set and all but one came down to the final points. The Falcons had three players with double-digit kills and five with double-digit digs in a strong effort.

Faculty and Staff Honored at Volleyball Match
MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo Volleyball team had a great turn-out for their game against the University of Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday night. The crowd was not only special for the women’s volleyball team, but also to faculty and staff members that the student-athletes had chosen to honor. Coach Katie O’Brien selected the evening as women’s volleyball’s Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. Each member of the women’s volleyball team selected a faculty or staff member who has made an impact on them academically and personally this year or consistently throughout their time at Montevallo, and personally invited them to attend a pregame ceremony in their honor.

The Falcons were led by senior’s Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and Carson Anderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) who had nine and eight kills, respectively.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (10-7, 2-1 PBC) dropped its first Peach Belt Conference contest of the season in a tough 3-2 match at Armstrong Atlantic State University (9-4, 2-1 PBC). The Falcons took a 2-1 lead into the fourth set but were unable to capture the victory as the Pirates used a strong comeback to win 3-2.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (10-6, 2-0 PBC) used another strong performance to move to 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conference after dismantling Francis Marion University (5-5, 0-1 PBC), 3-0. The Falcons end the first weekend of conference play on top of the standings as the only undefeated team left in the PBC.

Falcons Capture First Peach Belt Victory in School History
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (9-6, 1-0 PBC) became the first Montevallo team to capture a Peach belt Conference game in school history with a 3-0 sweep of UNC-Pembroke (5-7, 0-1 PBC). The Falcons were led by senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who had a match-high 14 kills along with five digs and three block assists. UM won in straight sets 25-23, 27-25 and 25-9.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team (8-6) took No. 18 University of West Florida (7-7) to the limit falling just short of victory, 3-2. The Falcons fell behind 2-0 in the early sets but used a strong will to win to comeback and take the next two sets to force a deciding fifth game. UM was led by a trio of seniors in Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson), Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) and Carson Anderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor).

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior outside hitter Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) of the University of Montevallo women's volleyball team (8-5) was named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week. This is the first PBC Player of the Week honor for any Montevallo student-athlete.

Falcons Split on Final Day of UAH Invitational
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (8-5) fell in its first match of the day 3-0 at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Invitational but came back and had a huge second match against the host team winning 3-0.The Falcons went from a .029 attack percentage in the first match to an outstanding .404 percentage in the second match.

Handrick Dominates as UM Takes Two at UAH Invite
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) had a standout two matches as the University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (7-4) picked up two victories over former Gulf South Conference rivals. Handrick had 50 kills along with 22 digs over the two matches with an outstanding .432 attack percentage as she led the way for the Falcons.

The Falcons were led by All-Tournament selection Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who had double-digit kills in both matches.

The Falcons opened up the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Arkansas Tech (3-2) before hammering the University of West Georgia (3-4), 3-0. The Falcons were led by sophomore setter Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) who picked up her fourth and fifth double-doubles of the season.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (3-2) returned to its winning ways last night as the Falcons defeated Stillman College (0-4), 3-1. The Falcons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before dropping the third set and eventually capturing the victory in the fourth.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (2-2) lost a pair of matches at the University of West Florida Comfort Inn-vitational. The Falcons opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Lynn University (2-1) before falling 3-1 to No. 21 Lewis University (3-1). The Falcons were led by senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) who had a total of 18 kills on the day.

Falcons Pick Up Two Wins on Opening Day
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (2-0) picked up two huge wins at the University of West Florida Comfort Inn-vitational. The Falcons took on two tough opponents in Henderson State University (0-1) and Florida Tech (1-1). UM opened the day against HSU and won 3-1 (25-21, 25-14, 26-28, 25-16) and then defeated Florida Tech 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11).

Johnson Named to PBC Preseason All-Conference Team
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior right side hitter Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) of the University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team was named to the Peach Belt Conference Preseason All-Conference Team as selected by the coaches. She becomes the first Montevallo athlete to earn an honor from the PBC.

Falcons Picked to Finish Fourth in PBC Preseason Poll
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team was selected to finish fourth by Peach Belt Conference coaches today (Aug. 14). The Falcons received three votes for second, two for third, one for fifth and a single vote for sixth. The Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State University were picked to finish first.
