Falcons Topple Tigers on the Road, 3-1
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's volleyball team (3-2) returned to its winning ways last night as the Falcons defeated Stillman College (0-4), 3-1. The Falcons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before dropping the third set and eventually capturing the victory in the fourth.
UM was led by senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who turned in her third double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs. She also chipped in two service aces. Senior's Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) and Carson Anderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) each chipped in nine kills. Anderson led the way in blocking with three solo stops while senior Lauren Markle (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) had three total blocks, two solo and one assist.
Sophomore setter Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) continued to impress with her third double-double of the season with 45 assists and 11 digs. Freshman libero Brittany Wilson (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) had another double-digit digs day with 12, her fourth of the season.
The Falcons won the first game 25-17 then fought off a tough Stillman team in the second game 25-23. The Tigers would respond with a 25-20 win of their own in the third game before falling to the Falcons 25-13 in the fourth and final set.
The Falcons will return to the court Saturday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. as they host Arkansas Tech in their first home match of the season. The match will be a part of the UM Volleyball Classic which features six teams and 24 hours of volleyball beginning Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
