Falcons Close Out UM Classic in Dominating Fashion

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's volleyball team (5-4) once again went 1-1 on the day. The Falcons opened up with a tough 3-2 loss to Valdosta State University (6-2) before destroying Clark Atlanta University (0-4) 3-0. The Falcons were led by All-Tournament selection Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who had double-digit kills in both matches.

The Falcons first match was a heartbreaker as they led 2-0 after two sets but fell 3-2 as VSU went on a run. The Falcons won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-18 before dropping the final three 25-23, 25-13 and 15-10.

UM was led by Handrick who had 15 kills along with 16 digs. Seniors CarsonAnderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) and Lauren Markle (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) each chipped in 11 kills as well. Anderson also had six block assists and assisted on all six Montevallo blocks. Freshman Brittany Wilson (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) led the team in digs with 22 while sophomore Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) had 14 digs to go along with her 46 assists. The final Falcons with double-digit digs was sophomore Rachel Wotitzky (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte) who chipped in 12.

The second match of the day was a lopsided affair and only lasted 40 minutes. The Falcons out-hit Clark Atlanta .516 to -.067. UM won in straight sets 25-7, 25-11 and 25-5. As a team the Falcons had 17 service aces led by five each from Handrick and Wotitzky.

In the first set the Falcons had a .789 attack percentage with 15 kills, zero errors and 19 attempts.

UM was led by Handrick who had 10 kills while Markle had 7 kills on eight attempts for a .875 attack percentage. Freshman Virginia Clay (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) had five blocks including one solo.

Wilson once again led in digs with eight and was followed by Garrison who had six to go with her 24 assists.

The Falcons will return to the court Friday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. as they compete in the University of Alabama at Huntsville Tournament.
