Falcons Move to 2-0 in PBC with Sweep of FMU

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's volleyball team (10-6, 2-0 PBC) used another strong performance to move to 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conference after dismantling Francis Marion University (5-5, 0-1 PBC), 3-0. The Falcons end the first weekend of conference play on top of the standings as the only undefeated team left in the PBC.

The Falcons used a strong hitting performance to gain the win as the team hit for a .337 percentage and the two top Montevallo hitters hit above.410. Senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) led the team with 16 kills and a .419 attack percentage while junior Rebecca Dowd (Dothan, Ala./Providence Christian School) had 11 kills and a .455 attack percentage.

Handrick chipped in six digs while Dowd had three. Sophomore Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) dished out 39 assists while digging up 12 balls just one behind freshman libero Brittany Wilson (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) who had 13. Senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) had eight kills and seven digs in the winning effort.

The Falcons cruised through the first two sets winning 25-19 and 25-16 and then dominated early in the third set going up 13-4 before allowing the Patriots to clay their way back into the set. The Patriots got within five points at 22-17 but that would be as close as they would come to taking a lead as the Falcons went on to win 25-19.

The Falcons will return to the court Friday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. as they travel to Armstrong Atlantic State University for a tough conference contest. AASU currently sits at 1-1 in the conference and most recently lost 3-1 to USC-Aiken.
