Falcons Fall in Final Points of Fifth Set, 3-2

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's volleyball team (14-11, 4-5 PBC) jumped out to an early lead grabbing a 2-0 lead over the third ranked team in the region but dropped the final three sets to fall 3-2 against Armstrong Atlantic State University (16-7, 7-2 PBC). The Falcons were led by senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) who had 17 kills and nine digs along with three service aces. The match was also the Falcons Dig Pink event which helped raise money and awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer.

The Falcons dominated the first set holding the Pirates to just seven kills as they won 25-13. In the second set the Falcons and Pirates battled back-and-forth with neither team giving up much of an edge. 25 points were not enough to decide the set as it went into extra points as the Falcons won 31-29.

The third set was much like the second as both teams battled for each point but in the end it was the Pirates who came out on top 25-23. The Pirates controlled the fourth set holding the Falcons to just seven kills winning 25-11.

In the fifth and final set it looked like the Falcons would come out with the victory as they jumped out to a 10-5 lead but just six points later the Falcons lead had been cut to just one at 11-10. UM regained the momentum winning the next two points to take a 13-10 advantage but the Pirates would not be taken down as they battled back to tie the set at 14. AASU then took three of the next four points to win 17-15.

Senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs while sophomore setter Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) had 42 assists and 15 digs for a double-double of her own.

Senior CarsonAnderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) was third on the team in kills with eight and she chipped in five blocks as well. Junior Rebecca Dowd (Dothan, Ala./Providence Christian School) had seven kills to finish fourth on the team.

Freshman Brittany Wilson (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) led the team in digs with 19 and had three service aces while sophomore Rachel Wotitzky (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte) had 15 digs and two service aces.

The Falcons will return to the court tomorrow, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m. as they host Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference match-up.
