Falcons Pick Up a Pair of Wins at Home

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's volleyball team (18-13, 7-6 PBC) won a pair of matches against USC Aiken (14-17, 5-9 PBC) and Miles College (6-14). The Falcons won in thrilling fashion against Aiken 3-2 before dominating Miles 3-0. Senior Katie Johnson (Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) led the team in kills in both matches picking up 20 against Aiken before scoring 10 against Miles.

The Falcons opened up with conference foe USC Aiken and it looked like it would be a tough loss after the first two sets as Aiken won set one 25-19 and set two 25-20. UM began a huge comeback in the third set as they dominated the Pacers 25-13 and held them to a negative hitting percentage (-.026). After grabbing the momentum from the Pacers in the third set the Falcons went on to win the fourth set with a unbelievable comeback.

Down 24-21 the Falcons rallied behind strong serving from freshman Brittany Wilson (Floyds Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) and three kills from senior Katy Handrick (De Pere, Wisc./De Pere) to gain the lead and eventually win 27-25.

With two huge momentum shifting sets the Falcons went into the fifth set with new confidence. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead and held on in the end winning 15-13 and sweeping the season series against the Pacers 2-0.

Johnson led the team with 20 kills and 13 digs while hitting an impressive .311. Handrick chipped in 14 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Third in kills was junior Rebecca Dowd (Dothan, Ala./Providence Christian School) who had eight kills and seven digs.

Senior CarsonAnderson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) had an outstanding match with seven kills and a season-high nine blocks including two solo. Wilson led the team in digs with 28 and service aces with two.

Sophomore Anna Garrison (LaVergne, Tenn./LaVergne) had 51 assists and 11 digs good for her 16th double-double of the season. She also tied for the lead in service aces with two. Classmate Rachel Wotitzky (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte) also had double-digit digs with 12.

In the second match of the night for the Falcons UM dominated from start to finish winning in just 45 minutes. They won the first two sets by the score of 25-6 before winning set three 25-10.

The Falcons hit at or above .500 in the first two sets before dropping down in the third set to .294.

UM was led by Johnson who had 10 kills and four service aces and hit an impressive .471. Three Falcons tied for second in kills with eight each. Anderson had eight kills and five digs and hit a team high .727. Junior Kara Zawisza (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) had eight kills and hit .438 while Dowd had eight kills and hit .667.

Garrison played the first set dishing out 10 assists while freshman Betsy Stevenson (DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Walton) played the final two sets with 20 assists and six digs.   

The Falcons will return to the court tomorrow, Nov. 7 at 3:00 p.m. as they host Lander University in Peach Belt Conference action. The match is the final regular season match of the year and also Senior Day.
