Cross Country Championship Preview
MONTEVALLO, Ala.- The University of Montevallo women's cross country team is headed to Lumberton, N.C. to compete in its first Peach Belt Conference Championship. The championship is the first of the PBC-GEICO Championship Series and brings together the largest field for a cross country championship the PBC has had since 2003. The Falcons come in ranked ninth in the Southeast Region by the USTFCCCA and third in the Peach Belt behind Columbus State and Augusta State.
The Falcons are sending seven runners to the race including their two standout freshmen, Haley Evans (Fairhope, Ala./Fairhope) and Kaley Glover (Opelika, Ala./Beauregard). The two have competed in four 5k races in their career at Montevallo and hold six of the top-10 times in school history including the top spot held by Evans. The championship race will be a 6k which the Falcons ran in their final race of the regular season capturing a victory at the Tiger Twilight Invitational hosted by Sewanee: The University of the South.
Evans and Glover ran the fourth and fifth-fastest times in the PBC in a 5k this season at the Gulf Coast Stampeded where Evans broke the school record and Glover finished just four seconds later to also eclipse the old mark.
The former record holder at Montevallo will also be running side-by-side with Evans and Glover as Ginny Davis (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones) returns for her sophomore season to help lead the Falcons to their first PBC Championship. Davis has been a steady force in her two seasons at Montevallo as she paced the squad her freshman year and has now moved into a co-leadership role with Evans and Glover. The three of them have been the top-three finishers for the Falcons in every race this season.
The other Falcons competing to score points for UM will be sophomore Whitney Adkins (Conyers, Ga./Heritage), sophomore Georgia Izard (Birmingham, Ala./John Carroll Catholic), sophomore Katherine Schofield (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) and junior January Waters (Grayson, Ga./Grayson).
The Falcons faced PBC competition in just one race this season as they competed at the Mercer Invitational. At the meet the Falcons finished first among the five competing PBC teams including beating the four-time defending PBC Champions Columbus State University.
The race will begin at 8:30 eastern time at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton, N.C.
