MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo Athletic Department in conjunction with the University of Montevallo cross country team hosted the inaugural Montevallo Early Bird Classic. Over 1200 runners and spectators took part in the event which lasted from 9:00 a.m. till noon on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The meet featured four races including a middle school boys 3K, a middle school girls 3K, a high school boys 5K and a high school girls 5K.
The event is part of the Athletic Department’s Community Engagement Initiative. NCAA Division II is committed to developing students and communities by actively engaging in shared experiences. The objective is bringing community to campus to experience Division II collegiate events.
Over 30 teams registered for the event including Helena Middle School, Homewood High School, Hoover High School, John Carroll Catholic High School, Montevallo Middle School, Oak Mountain Middle School, Pelham High School, Thompson High School and many others.
The University of Montevallo men’s and women’s cross country teams, men’s golf team and women’s basketball team all volunteered at the event with set-up, parking, registration and course management.
